The Butterfly Boy - Laurance Yep based this book on the writings of Chuang Tzu, sometimes called the Butterfly Philosopher, who lived in China during the troubled times at the end of the fourth century B. C. This is a tale of a boy who sometimes thinks he is a butterfly. His strange behavior puts him in uncomfortable situations and he is often ridiculed by others. When his homeland is invaded by a cruel lord, his people live in fear. Odd as he is, the boy does not fear the lord--only laughs at him. The lord's first thought is to punish the boy, but then he comes to believe the boy is either a prophet or madman and he lets him go. Winter arrives early and the lord and his soldiers perish in the snow. Following this, the villagers come to honor and respect the boy. (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1993)
